Mary A., wife of Rev. Jacob Surface, departed this life April 28, 1874, aged 40 years, 5 months and 11 days. Deceased joined the Church of the United Brethren in Christ in her youthful days, and died in the triumph of living faith. When dying she said to her husband, “Preach the Gospel while you live, and when you come home bring all the friends with you; don’t leave one behind.” To her children she said, “Live as I have tried to teach you and meet me in heaven.” Then she requested singing. Her friends could not sing the song she wished, and she sang one verse herself.
“Take the name of Jesus ever
As a shield from every snare,
If temptation round you gather,
Breathe that holy name in prayer”
And thus she left the world, to be mourned by husband and children and sympathizing friends. -s
